Best Posts of 2009
It’s that time of year where all the papers, magazines and websites devolve into the best of the year articles rather than actually generate new content. I didn’t want to feel left out so here’s my contribution.
Of course “best” can mean any number of different things, so I’m going to pick a few top fives.
Here are the most popular pages viewed this year:
- Installing Oracle 10g Express Edition on CentOS 4
- Professionalism
- Oracle 8i for Linux Installation HOWTO
- Minolta Dual Scan II
- Review: Belkin Wi-Fi Phone
It continues to surprise me how popular the Oracle pages are. They are now very old products and the pages have not been updated for quite some time now.
And here are the most popular pages that were actually written this year:
Of course my personal favourites don’t always make the grade in terms of page views, so here are my choices (in no particular order this time):
If there’s a theme here, it’s photography and the kinds of pictures that I don’t normally take.
My delicious.com bookmarks for December 22nd through December 27th

- Google ‘open’ memo betrays deep corporate delusion – "Aside from Apple, no tech outfit is more secretive about what goes on inside the company."

Top 10 (2008)
It’s that time of year where every magazine and website does a retrospective, regurgitating old material with no shame. I didn’t want to miss out this year. Digging into my Google Analytics logs I found the following…
Ten most read pages this year:
- Installing Oracle 10g XE on CentOS 4. This page was actually 35% more popular this year than last despite the ageing versions of both Linux and Oracle
- Sri Lanka. This has been one of my most popular pages for years, although it took a 50% dive in page impressions this year due to the loss of a single referrer
- Oracle on Linux Installation Howto
- Minolta Dual Scan II film scanner review. Another surprise given the age of the scanner and the rise of digital cameras
- Belkin WiFi (Skype) Phone review
- Photobook Group Test (Part 1)
- Printing-1 Photobook Review (Part 1)
- Photobook Group Test (Part 3)
- Sophia Smith
- Photobook Group Test (Part 4)
Somehow part two of my photobook group test slipped out of the top ten.
I immediately noticed that no post from this year made it into the list, so here’s the Top Ten posts from this year:
- YoPhoto Photobook Review (Part 1)
- YoPhoto Photobook Review (Part 2)
- Eight Best Computer Books
- Cycling from the Czech Republic to Germany
- Byline Bypass
- PhotoFriday: My Little Secret
- PhotoFriday: The Great Outdoors
- PhotoFriday: Autumn
- PhotoFriday: Disastrous
- PhotoFriday: Tools
A number of my favourite posts of the year didn’t make the popularity grade. I had a good smattering, with some decent IT articles (1 2), a large number about developing my iPhone application Yummy (1 2 3 4 5 6 7) and I was quite pleased with my movie poster edits (1 2).
Overall it was a busy year! Thanks for reading. I’m sure I’ll be back with more in 2009. Stay tuned.
